Best Churches in Paris – My Bucket List

Churches of Paris

I’m heading to Paris in just a few days, for a lovely break with my fiance, and, of course, a fair bit of temple seeking! I have been to Paris before, for 5 days. This time we are going for almost 2 weeks and this will give us plenty more time to explore more thoroughly. I’m VERY excited about the Churches in Paris. Here are the best Churches in Paris to visit – you should definitely add these to your Paris Bucket List!

The Best Churches in Paris

1. Notre Dame de Paris

Made famous by Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the best Churches in Paris and one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in the world. I have visited before, but didn’t fully explore the intricacy of the statues and gargoyles. Neither did I climb to the top – let’s hope I’m up to it!

2. Sainte-Chapelle

The last time I visited Sainte Chapelle, I remember the striking blue stained glass lighting up the chapel. I have to go back to experience the light inside this Gothic gem once again, and take photos with my Digital SLR. Sainte-Chapelle was originally built to house relics of the passion including the crown of thorns, a fragment of the original cross and the holy lance.

3. Sacre Coeur Basilica

Based in the romantic Monmartre district of Paris, the Sacre Coeur or Sacred Heart is one of the most recognisable Churches in Paris. Architecturally, Sacre Coeur is more inline with San Marco of Venice (Romano Byzantine) than the gothic styles of Notre Dame and Sainte-Chapelle. Internally, it houses the Apse Mosaic of Christ in all his glory, surrounded by the Saints that protect France – the Virgin Mary, Saint Michael and Joan of Arc.

4. Saint Eustache

This Church is probably most famously known for its close proximity to the Louvre. It’s ‘unfinished’ look apparently adds to its eclectic charm.

5. Saint Sulpice

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Sulpice is the second tallest church in the city, after Notre Dame. It is dedicated to the French Saint Sulpitus the pious.
