Top 10 Travel Tips!

Top Travel Tips

Many people are asking me to share my top 10 travel tips. This is a difficult one because there are so many tips I want to share! But, if I had to summarise my 10 most important travel tips, here’s what I would say…

1. Travel Slow

The first of my top travel tips is to chill out and appreciate the culture, rather than rushing to the next city or country. People who have a strict and tight schedule don’t often have the time to relax and truly appreciate the new culture or way of life. I am a big fan of slow travel. This is one of the top travel tips to have in mind when traveling.

2. Sew a Pocket Inside your best Travel Trousers

Keeping your money safe, and having an energy set of funds that can’t be seen, is important for your survival on the road. Have a pocket sewn in the lining of your favorite travel trousers so that you always have some money ready in case of an emergency. I got mine done in Rwanda.
Alternatively, get a travel belt that you can wear discreetly under your trousers.
Keep small change in a deep pocket for buses and street food, so that you don’t have to flash your cash.

3. Plan your Routes, but don’t Over-Plan your Travel

Always know where you are going, especially in big cities like Delhi (India) and Bangkok (Thailand). But, allow for some flexibility. You might fall in love with a city and not have enough time to explore if your tight schedule only allows 3 days.

4. Pack Light

You will always find what you need to buy abroad. It’s better to take to little than too much. After all, you’re the one who will have to carry it. I learned this on my trip to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, where we had to carry our own bags for 6 weeks in the desert!

5. Avoid Touts

Avoid the touts at stations and airports and carry small bills so you don’t get ripped off. Every time you reach a train station or airport, either book a transfer in advance with a reliable and reasonable company, or walk straight outside to the official taxi rank. Do not talk to people who try to stop you straight off the train.

6. Prioritize your Health

One of my most important travel tips is to prioritize your health – your health is the most important thing, as, without it, you can’t travel. Be up to date with all of your travel injections. If you are sick, everything stops, and don’t be afraid to call a doctor – better to be safe than sorry.
Take a good basic medical kit and carry it with you at all times. Make sure that you have appropriate travel insurance that covers you for pre-existing medical conditions.

7. Do Your Research Prior to Departing

It is important to know exactly where you are going and what to expect. Research additional items to pack e.g. Malaria Tablets or Mosquito Nets. Use TripAdvisor to find out about the best hostels and restaurants.

8. Take a pair of Good Walking Boots

Your walking boots are probably the most important piece if equipment for your travels. Choose them wisely, and wear them in for a few weeks (even months) before you travel, particularly if you are trekking.

9. Use Skype to keep in touch with friends and family back home.

You will get lonely on the road, particularly if you are traveling solo. Make sure that you have a Skype or Facebook account to keep in touch with family or friends back home.

10. Walk down the Streets with Confidence

The last of my travel tips is to walk with confidence, even if you are lost! Go into a hotel or restaurant to ask for directions, rather than asking someone on the street. Also, use your instincts.

Hi Liliy, great to hear from you. You will be best getting around on the Tube (underground) – grab yourself an Oyster card. It is rare that the Tube stops due to bad weather. If the Tubes do stop, it’s probably because the weather is too bad to get around at all! One word of warning – expect London to be BUSY in December with Christmas approaching. Avoid taxis in London, way too expensive. Good luck with your travels, and let me know if you need any more help!
