I recently visited Andorra for the first time, and really enjoyed it. Andorra is a micro-state between France and Spain in the middle of the Pyrenees. Quite honestly, I didn’t really know much about Andorra before I visited, just that it was a great spot for beginners skiing in Pal-Arinsal. However, after spending 6 days in Andorra, I realised that there is a lot more to it than skiing and the outdoors. So, is Andorra worth visiting? I vote yes!

Andorra – Getting there and away
First things first, how do you get to Andorra? Well, it is difficult to get to Andorra because there is no airport, so you need to fly into Barcelona or Toulouse and travel from there. Bear in mind that it is definitely NOT doable as a day trip from Barcelona or Toulouse because the trip overland is around 3 hours. You should ideally plan Andorra as a separate trip and to allow for the Andbus journey.
What is the best time of year to visit Andorra?
The activities that you want to do in Andorra will dictate to you the best time of year to visit. When is the Best Time to Visit Andorra? For skiing, you need to go from December to March for the best powder. Summer (June to September) is the best time for hiking and other outdoor activities such as cycling. The shoulder seasons are quieter, but with fewer outdoor activities. However, this time of year can be great for shoppers and foodies to visit.
Is Andorra worth visiting? I vote yes!
So, is Andorra worth visiting? My overall verdict is yes – absolutely! English is widely spoken and it is a very small country, so easy to get around. Andorra is popular with skiers in the winter and cyclists or hikers in the summer. As well as the outdoor enthusiasts, it appeals to foodies (for the mountain gastronomy) and shoppers (for the duty free). Andorra is child friendly and so it is worth it for families – there is even a nursery ski school if your child wants to learn how to ski. But, even if you are not a skier, I would still say that Andorra is worth visiting. Andorra is a worthwhile destination in its own right, and not just a ski destination. You can hang out in Andorra La Vella (the capital city), shop on the main streets and relax in Caldea Spa, which is the largest thermal spa complex in Southern Europe.

Is Andorra worth visiting? Top choice for Skiers!
This small Pyrenean country is famous for the outdoors and gorgeous mountain scenery. It is definitely worth visiting if you are skiing due to the numerous ski resorts including Pal-Arinsal, Granvalira and Ordino-Arcalis. The best time to go is early December to early April, but people have previously reported good snow into May in the mountains of Andorra. Andorra boasts over 200km+ of pistes and modern facilities, with more attractive prices than the Alps. There is excellent Après-ski and some gorgeous resort towns like Pas de la Casa.
The ski resorts in Andorrra have a good variety of slopes, including a good selection of green (very easy) and blue (easy) runs for beginners. Ordino-Arcalis is famous for the longest green run in Europe – the ‘megaverda’, which is a whopping 8km! There are a few places that have good challenging runs for more advanced skiers as well, such as Soldeu (Avets black slope) and El Tartar (Miquel red slope).

Top Reasons to Visit Andorra
- Location in the Pyrenees offers great views and scenery.
- Compact size makes it easy to explore in a few days.
- Over 90% nature – ideal for outdoor lovers!
- Great for skiing at all levels through from beginner to advanced.
- Great hiking and cycling in the summer months.
- Duty free shopping in Andorra la Vella (make-up, technology, clothes, alcohol and cigarettes).
- Spa and wellness culture (don’t miss Caldea Spa).
- Gastronomy – the combination of French and Spanish food in a mountain range results in great stews, cheese fondues, pastries and even snails!

Is Andorra worth visiting for shoppers?
Yes! If you love to shop, then Andorra is for you, because it offers duty free shopping and excellent shops in the centre of the capital Andorra la Vella. There are over 2,000 shops in a small area, with popular duty free specialist department stores such as Uailo (duty free department store), Julia (great for perfume and MediaMarkt (electrionics). The shops are generally open quite late, so it is possible to go shopping after a day of skiing if you still have the energy.
In Andorra la Vella, go straight to the main shopping street Avinguda Meritxell, which is the main shopping street and the heart of duty-free shopping. It’s referred to as Andorra’s famous “shopping mile”. If you have time, go inside Centro Comercial Pyrenees and combine that with a walk down Fener Boulevard. Because Andorra is a low-tax (duty-free) country, alcohol, cigarettes and perfumes are great value. I loved the make-up shopping and ended up with a £500 eye-cream for £80! My aunty Deb would love it!
Is Andorra Worth Visiting for Families?
If you are travelling as a family, you will be pleased to hear that Andorra is very family friendly. It is a safe country, with a relaxed atmosphere and low crime rate. Being such a small country, it is easy to get around on local transport.
The ski resorts are well set up and many have nursuery slopes and ski lessons bookable for young children from 3+. They start off in the specialized “Snow Gardens” and these nursery slopes are available in major resorts like Grandvalira, Ordino Arcalís, and Pal Arinsal. At this age, lessons focus on fun, balance, and familiarity with snow and gear through playful, safe, and adapted instruction.
Beyond skiing, there are some great activities that children love including the Toboggan rides and adventure parks (check out Tobotronc at Naturland). Children will also be able to enjoy swimming in the thermal spas and hotel pools, so pack floats and water wings if they want to do this!
Many hotels in Andorra have child friendly food options. At Hotel Magic Ski, we saw plenty of burgers, chicken nuggets, chips, beans and spaghetti bolognese on offer.
Is Andorra Worth Visiting for Couples?
Andorra has beautiful romantic mountain scenery and cosy villages where you can snuggle up and cuddle! There are boutique hotels which are perfect for couples and there are also some peaceful retreats. I would say that it is more ideal for active and outdoorsy couples, rather than those seeking a buzzing cultural city break. Andorra is also LGBTQI+ friendly and so it is fine for same sex couples to travel there. Andorra la Vella has a gay pride event every year and hosts ‘Andorra gay weekend’ annually. The country legalized same-sex marriage in 2023.
Pros and Cons of Visiting Andorra
Now that I have established that Andorra is definitely worth visiting, let’s summarise the pros and cons of visiting Andorra….
Pros
- Stunning mountain landscapes and spas.
- Excellent skiing and outdoor activities.
- Tax-free shopping (take plenty of EUROS).
- Safe and compact destination.
- Family friendly and great for couples.
- LGBTQI+ friendly.
Cons
- No airport in Andorra (requires Andbus transfer from Spain or France).
- Limited cultural attractions compared to other major cities in Europe.
- It is so small that it can almost feel like a resort rather than a country.
- Only worth visiting for a couple of days if you are not skiing or taking part in outdoors activities such as hiking or cycling.
Is it worth visiting Andorra? Overall Verdict
My overall verdict is that yes, Andorra is definitely worth visiting. However, whether or not Andorra is worth it for you highly depends on the type of person that you are and what you are looking for in a holiday. For outdoorsy couples and families (especially skiers), this is the perfect holiday. It is also a nice break for people who want to shop and eat out in the capital, but don’t expect to find monuments and cultural sites as you would somewhere like Barcelona, Vienna or Budapest.
Andorra is not really for you if you are looking for a beach holiday (yup – it’s landlocked!) or a culture packed and buzzing city break. However, if you go for the outdoor activities then you will find some good culture and shopping in the capital of Andorra la Vella.
I really believe that if you go with great people, regardless of what you are looking for from a holiday, you will still have a good time. Andorra would also be ideal for a solo traveller because it is a safe destination with a low crime rate and the small size of it makes it so easy to get around.
