I’m currently on a health kick for two reasons – firstly to recover from my endometriosis excision surgery and secondly to try to fit into my wedding dress! After getting engaged two years ago, we then faced major challenges including major illness, bereavement and burglary, just to mention a few! Thankfully, we have come out of the other side, and are so excited for our city centre wedding in June. Until then, I’m working out and eating in the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants Liverpool has to offer! Here’s my recommended selection…
Top Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants Liverpool
The best vegetarian restaurants in Liverpool that I have found are mostly around the Bold Street area, but there are also good places in Liverpool ONE that do vegetarian options such as Las Iguanas (Tapas) and Yee Rah (World Cuisine – Thai/Eclectic).
Love thy Neighbour
Love thy Neighbour at the top of Bold Street is a new restaurant with a vegan and veggie focus. The menu is simple and contains some meat options but plenty of veggie and vegan alternatives. I highly recommend the ‘Buddha Bowls!’ You can get three different options:
- Sweet potato – chickpea coriander – coconut – peanut
- Beetroot – falafel – yoghurt – barley
- Tenderstem broccoli – duck egg – chilli – tahini – glass noodles
There is a vegetarian alternative to the cooked breakfast and also some gorgeous veggies sides – my favourites are the sweet potato mash and the beetroot hummus.
There are some refreshing and soothing drinks available. Loose leaf teas are around £2.75 and pressed juices around £3. You can also order a ‘pick me up’ smoothie for around £4.50 – I love the apple, blueberry and rasberry!
LEAF on Bold Street
LEAF is one of my favourite cafes and drinking holes in Liverpool. The menu includes veggie and vegan classics such as olives, hummus, falafel and grilled haloumi. Expect to pay around £5 for these light lunches. There are also some larger mains such as vegetable curry and roast aubergine for around £9. The selection of teas at LEAF is phenomenal. My favourites include fairy wings, exotic garden, Moroccan mint and blood orange. The teas are around £2.50 each. There is also now a LEAF on Smithdown Road if you don’t want to head into the city centre. LEAF offers some of the best vegan food Liverpool has to offer!
Cafe Latino at the LIVE organic and Natural Food Market
At the bottom of Bold Street, I highly recommend Cafe Latino in the LIVE organic and natural food market. For just £7.99 I picked up a scrummy veggie lasagne with a choice of salad sides including butternut squash, rocket and feta, new potatoes and green bean salad. There was also a vegetarian breakfast, chilli, veggie sausages and veggie frittata. They vary the mains every day. Upgrade to a bigger plate for £9.99 if you’re hungry, and you can fit more salad, but I found the regular £7.99 plates more than enough! Tea is around £2 at Cafe Latino, making it slightly cheaper than LEAF on Bold Street. If you want to save even further, both LEAF and Cafe Latino have iced water with lemon for free to customers.
EGG Vegetarian Cafe
Be prepared for the stairs – you need to climb 3 flights to EGG Vegetarian Cafe, and there isn’t disabled access. However, when you get to the top, this chilled and bohemian hang out is well worth it. EGG cafe is situated on Newington just off Bold Street and quite near to the Bombed out Church (St. Luke’s).
EGG have special dishes on a daily basis such as veggie chilli, lasagne, pie, tagine, fritata, It’s a fantastic international selection freshly made by their vegetarian chef. There are some lovely soups for round £3 and cakes for just under £3 which are divine – I recommend the vegan chocolate cake and the carrot cake. Light bites such as quiche or hummus are around £5. EGG vegetarian cafe do a special deal or set menu for £9.95, which is a starter, main and dessert plus tea. This is excellent value.
On a Sunday, they do a Sunday Roast which is traditional English Sunday dinner with nut roast instead of meat plus veggies. Definitely one of my top vegetarian restaurants Liverpool.
Wahaca Liverpool
Wahaca is a Mexican restaurant with both meat and veggie options on College Lane. For vegans, I recommend the sweet potato burrito (the best vegan food Liverpool has to offer!). They also identify gluten free options as well as vegetarian.
Want something a bit more spicey? Sanskruti and Mowgli offer Indian vegetarian dishes in Liverpool.
