Although it’s not as cheap as South Asian countries such as Thailand and Cambodia, Japan is a top choice for those who want to see the contrasting bright lights of Tokyo with the temples of Osaka and Kyoto.
Japan Itinerary Ideas
Most Japan itineraries start in Tokyo. For a two week itinerary, you can spend 5-7 days in Tokyo and use this as a base for a day trip to Kamakura, Nikko or Yokohama. Spend at least 3-4 full days in Tokyo exploring the different neighbourhoods. Both Shinto and Buddhist temples can be found in Tokyo, many are very Instagram-worthy spots. In Tokyo, don’t miss the Meiji Shrine, Sensoji temple and the Nezu Shrine (read more about the temples of Japan).
If you are interested in exploring the temples of Tokyo, I highly recommend the Tokyo temples and shrines morning tour with Get Your Guide.
Japan Itinerary Tokyo to Kyoto
For the second part of your Japan Itinerary, you can travel from Tokyo to Kyoto by bullet train and use Kyoto as a base. You can then take day trips to Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Miyajima Island. Kyoto and Osaka are home to some of the best temples of Japan.
